superminimalism is a jazz quintet established by drummer Stefan Raczkowski in 2020 as a space to implement individual compositional ideas. By definition, the band is characterised by a jazz sound, but the musical material goes in different directions in its concept. In 2021, superminimalism made its debut during the Jazz Juniors competition, where was awarded the second prize and was invited to the Polska Jazz Festival in Budapest and the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival in Canada, and a year later received the Grand Prix at the JAZZiNSPIRACJE competition as part of the Lublin Jazz festival, which resulted in the recording and release of the band’s debut EP entitled “Prelude”. In addition to Stefan on drums, the band consists of Marcin Elszkowski on trumpet, Jakub Łępa on saxophone, Robert Wypasek on saxophone, and Michał Aftyka on double bass.
Artist statement:
I would like to inscribe my works into larger, complex forms, using my previous experience with contemporary and orchestral music. I am fascinated by the combination of jazz stylistics combined with elements of aleatorism and sonorism, the use of counterpoints and transformations. Limited instruments (three wind instruments, double bass and drums) and resignation from the harmonic instrument allow me to freely operate the melodic line and inspire an illustrative approach to music.
