Tom McDermott, born in St. Louis, Missouri, is a pianist and composer celebrated for his mastery of New Orleans musical traditions. He began piano lessons at the age of six and became a professional musician by sixteen.After earning a Master of Music degree from Washington University in St. Louis McDermott moved to New Orleans in 1984, drawn by his passion for the city’s rich musical heritage. His style encompasses a wide range of genres, including traditional jazz, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B, influenced by legends like James Booker, Dr. John, and Professor Longhair.

McDermott’s versatility is evident in his extensive discography, which includes nearly twenty full-length albums covering various musical styles. He was a member of the Dukes of Dixieland in the 1990s and co-founded the innovative brass band the New Orleans Nightcrawlers in 1994, contributing to the evolution of the city’s brass band scene .
