Donald Harrison is a legendary saxophonist, composer, and cultural icon whose musical legacy spans traditional New Orleans jazz, modern jazz, funk, and hip-hop. A master of the alto saxophone, Harrison is known for his soulful tone, virtuosic technique, and innovative approach to blending genres. Raised in New Orleans, he grew up immersed in the city’s vibrant musical and cultural traditions, including the Black Indian culture of Mardi Gras, where he carries the distinguished title of “Big Chief” of the Congo Square Nation. Harrison’s groundbreaking work includes collaborations with jazz legends such as Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis, Ron Carter, and Dr. John. His visionary style, often called “Nouveau Swing,” effortlessly fuses jazz with funk, second-line rhythms, and even hip-hop, influencing artists like Notorious B.I.G., who credited Harrison with shaping his early sound.

In addition to his work as a performer and bandleader, Donald Harrison is a dedicated educator and mentor, guiding the next generation of jazz musicians. Notably, he mentored artists such as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and Trombone Shorty, both of whom credit Harrison with helping to shape their careers. His contributions to music and culture have earned him numerous accolades, including being inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Whether leading a swinging jazz set or performing with his electrifying funk ensemble, Harrison brings a deep sense of history, passion, and innovation to every note he plays.
