Berklee’s Singers Showcase presents Forever Whitney Houston, a multifaceted celebration of the artistry, performance, and enduring legacy of one of the greatest singers of all time and a defining voice in the history of popular music.
Featuring a global student cast representing disciplines across the institution, this concert explores the music of a singular artist and cultural icon through bold original arrangements, inventive orchestration, and fresh interdisciplinary collaborations. Selected through a highly competitive audition process, the ensemble brings together some of Berklee’s finest vocalists, instrumentalists, arrangers, conductors, dancers, choreographers, sound designers, and visual artists in a production that is both artistically ambitious and marked by passion, nuance, and respect.
From chart-topping anthems to beloved deep cuts, students bring their own artistic perspectives to Houston’s remarkable catalogue, interpreting songs that have shaped generations of listeners. The result is an expansive musical portrait of an artist whose influence continues to resonate across pop, R&B, gospel, soul, and film.
Known worldwide as “The Voice,” Houston transformed the possibilities of contemporary commercial singing through her unmistakable timbre, soaring vocal range, unmatched technical command, emotional honesty, and stylistic versatility. Rooted in the rich traditions of gospel music, she honed her extraordinary gifts singing in church before emerging from one of the most influential musical families in American culture. The daughter of acclaimed gospel and soul singer Cissy Houston, cousin of Dionne Warwick, and goddaughter of Aretha Franklin, Houston belonged to a notable artistic lineage while forging a sound and identity all her own.
The concert will feature special musical guests, including the Overjoyed Gospel Ensemble, as well as a collaboration with the Dance Division at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Award-winning faculty member Anthony Burrell will premiere original choreography inspired by the elegance, strength, joy, theatricality, and commanding stage presence that defined Houston’s performances.
Now in its 43rd year, Singers Showcase is Berklee College of Music’s longest-running concert series and a cornerstone of its commitment to artistic excellence, highlighting the breadth, depth, and diversity of our extraordinary student community. In this show, audiences will experience Houston’s body of work in a way that feels both timeless and entirely new, realized through the creativity, craft, and collaborative spirit of the next generation of artists who carry that legacy forward. The concert is produced by Maureen McMullan PD ’09.
