Close Up presents the ‘Orchard Street Jazz Festival’ from Sep 30th – October 5th bringing together a collection of some of the brightest musical innovators of our time. The festival also celebrates the release and launch of the club’s label with 7 bands performing who’s live records were released in September 2026. This festival is made in part by our partners at D’Addario.

Shimmer Wince is quintet led by saxophonist, flutist, and composer Anna Webber. FeaturingAdam O’Farrill on trumpet, Mariel Roberts Musa on cello, Elias Stemeseder on synthesizer, andLesley Mok on drums, the music for this ensemble explores the applications of Just Intonation ina jazz/improvised context, including its intersections with rhythm and groove. Just Intonation, orJI, is an ancient tuning system based on the natural harmonics and resonances of notes and, forWebber, represents for a continuation of her research into timbre and sound.

Shimmer Wince stands as a monument to unbridled creativity; a demanding yet tightly woven body of work where the musicians play with and against each other, exploring new directions with both rigor and ingenuity. Anna Webber (b. 1984) is a flutist, saxophonist, and composer whose interests and work live in the aesthetic overlap between avant-garde jazz and new classical music. Her music has been called “visionary and captivating,” (Wall Street Journal), and “heady music [that] appeals to the rest of the body” (NPR). In 2024 alone, she received the Herb Albert Award in the Arts, a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works commission, and was voted top of both the tenor saxophone and flute “Rising Star” categories in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll. She was additionally voted top of the Downbeat “Rising Star” arranger category in 2025 and the composer category in2026.Webber is originally from British Columbia.

Over the course of the last decade, Brooklyn native Adam O’Farrill (b. 1994), has cemented himself as one of the most in-demand trumpet players on the international contemporary jazz scene, and is widely recognized as a “rising star as a player and composer” (PopMatters) and “ablazing young trumpet talent” (The New York Times). Of course, none one of this comes as anysurprise, considering the rich musical lineage into which he was born: Adam’s grandfather wasthe boundary-pushing Cuban composer and arranger, Chico O’Farrill; his father is the composer,pianist, and activist, Arturo O’Farrill; his mother, Alison Deane, is a classical pianist andeducator; his brother and frequent collaborator, Zack O’Farrill, is a drummer and musicologist. Adam himself has been featured with the likes of Hiromi, Mary Halvorson, Vijay Iyer, Anna Webber, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Mulatu Astatke, Samora Pinderhughes, Son Lux, and Kaoru Watanabe, and has garnered widespread acclaim as a leader in his own right.

American cellist Mariel Roberts music is widely recognized not just for her virtuosicperformances, but as a “fearless explorer” in her field (Chicago Reader). Her ravenous appetitefor collaboration and experimentation as an interpreter, improvisor, and composer have helpedcreate a body of work which bridges avant-garde, contemporary, classical, improvised, andtraditional music. Roberts is widely recognized for her “technical and interpretive mastery” (Icare if you listen) and for performances which seethe with “excruciating intensity” (The WholeNote). Roberts has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across four continents, most notably as a member and co-director of the Wet Ink Ensemble (named “The Best ClassicalMusic Ensemble of 2018” by The New York Times), as well as with the InternationalContemporary Ensemble (ICE), Mivos Quartet, Bang on a Can All Stars, and Ensemble Signal.

Elias Stemeseder (b. 1990) is a pianist, keyboard instrumentalist, electronic musician andcomposer who seeks to combine musical processes, disciplines and tools from diverse temporaland geographic origins to create personal sets of constraints and order. He has worked with Laurie Anderson, Jim Black, John Zorn, Craig Taborn, Ingrid Laubrock, Peter Evans, Joe McPhee, Anna Webber, Hamid Drake and Christian Lillinger, among others. Stemeseder is a recording artist for INTAKT records and appears as a on over 30 recordings, released by labels such as Intakt, Winter & Winter, Clean Feed and Pirouet Records. He has performed at the Village Vanguard, Elbphilharmonie, The Stone, Jazzfest Berlin and Copenhagen Jazz festival among others.

Lesley Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and sound artist. Their work is guided by a continual search for the connection between the mundane and the divine, the experience and manipulation of time, and a desire to capture emotional dissonance and complexity. Lesley is inspired by American experimental music as informed by the lineage of the AACM, sounds and textures from the natural environment, Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions, drumline, and songwriters and composers like Arthur Russell and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Lesley’s work has beenrecognized by the ASCAP Foundation and the Asian American Arts Alliance, and has been performed by International Contemporary Ensemble, Metropolis Ensemble, and JACK Quartet. They have collaborated with Tomeka Reid, William Parker, Ingrid Laubrock, Marilyn Crispell, Craig Taborn, Myra Melford, Mary Halvorson, Anna Webber, Kenny Barron, Cory Smythe, Jen Shyu, Kalia Vandever, Camila Nebbia, yuniya edi kwon, Micah Thomas, and Rafiq Bhati among others.
