Ami Taf Ra arrives at City Winery, joined by acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and producer Kamasi Washington in a special tour presentation of her debut album, The Prophet and the Madman. Produced by Washington and released on Brainfeeder, the record brings together Moroccan Gnawa, Arabic musical tradition, gospel, soul, and spiritual jazz, shaped by Kahlil Gibran’s writing on duality, healing, and transformation. Ami’s voice ranges from intimate to operatic, always in service of the story.
The collaboration is the album’s throughline, most audible on “How I Became a Madman,” a meditation on inner chaos meeting clarity, built on Washington’s expansive production and Ami’s cross cultural perspective. It is music that draws equally from ancient tradition and contemporary jazz’s improvisational freedom.
Ami has performed across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the United States, with credits at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, alongside the Dutch Royal Metropole Orchestra, and at City Winery Boston. Kamasi Washington, a Grammy winner and Emmy nominee, has built one of the defining catalogs of his generation across jazz, soul, hip hop, classical music, and film.
