The acclaimed and influential saxophonist makes his first appearance at the SFJAZZ Center with his trio including the monstrously talented drummer and multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole, lauded for his output as a bandleader and as part of the eclectic duo project Knower, and Serbian–born bassist Pera Krstajic, a young veteran of work with Lee Ritenour and Terri Lyne Carrington. They perform compositions from Binney’s electrified, groove-heavy 2023 Mythology Records release Action.
“One of the most original minds in contemporary music” (Stereophile), David Binney has consistently represented the current jazz scene at its most restless, prolific, and wide-ranging, recording over 25 albums and appearing on more than 400 releases. He has recorded and performed with a literal who’s-who of modern jazz, collaborating with Maria Schneider, Donny McCaslin, Edward Simon, Joel Harrison, Chris Potter, Antonio Sánchez, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, among dozens of others, and is an in-demand producer, assembling the Donny McCaslin band that recorded David Bowie’s final masterpiece, Blackstar.
With Action, Binney indulges his gift for electro-acoustic sounds and multifaceted approaches, balancing power-packed rave-ups and cutting-edge production with pastoral electronic soundscaping and breathless soloing.
