Jazz is an art form in which many a parent has passed the torch to a gifted son or daughter. In the case of drummer and percussionist Kojo Melché Roney, one of the music’s most formidable clans has anointed him as a fiery heir to the tradition. Performing with his father, powerhouse tenor saxophonist Antoine Roney, enacts this generational ritual, as Kojo comes into his own as a 21st century rhythm maker.
Antoine is the younger brother of the late trumpet great Wallace Roney, with whom he toured and recorded prolifically for over three decades. Antoine made his recording debut as a leader with 1992’s The Traveler, a blazing session featuring drum maestro Louis Hayes. Growing up in the Roney clan meant that Kojo was surrounded by drum masters of the highest order, such as Hayes, Roy Haynes, Al Foster, and Cindy Blackman Santana. And of course he absorbed wisdom from his aunt, the pervasively influential pianist and composer Geri Allen. By the time Kojo made his recording debut on Wallace’s final studio album, 2019’s young-talent showcase Blue Dawn-Blue Nights, he had also established himself in film, both with his own widely viewed projects and on the Shawn Mendes’ music video “Youth.” He released the impressive debut album Psychedelic in 2022 at the age of 19. The Roneys are joined by veteran Panamanian American bassist Russell Blake, who also hails for a great jazz family.
