Certain historical junctures have separated the past and the future so decisively that creative gestures are forced to either transform or be abandoned. The artists and artifacts that emerge from these ruptures, by definition, find themselves in a state of radical alienation. The music and art of the 20th and 21st centuries are marked by socio-political, cultural, and geographic ruptures and radically alienated artists and objects. Seen through this lens, we find new points of connectivity between musical movements that pose urgent questions for our own time.
