2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Perfect Angel, the classic album by Minnie Riperton. At the time of its release, Riperton was 27 years old and already a veteran of the music industry. As a teenager, she sang background vocals on sessions with Etta James and The Dells for Chess Records. Her “brightest moment” (Pitchfork) came in 1975 with the release of Perfect Angel, best known for the timeless hit “Lovin’ You.”

“Lovin’ You” topped the Billboard charts and showcased Riperton’s five-and-a-half-octave vocal range. Years later, the BBC noted, “with its extended chant to Maya Rudolph, her daughter, at the end, it is still affecting now as when it was first heard.” NPR reflected that the song is “in some ways bigger than Minnie Riperton, and…that’s unfortunate because it obscures the complexity and the depth of her catalog.”

Produced by Stevie Wonder and Richard Rudolph, Perfect Angel’s bright, soulful blend of pop, rock, and soul highlighted Riperton’s musical vision and remains a landmark in her brilliant career.

Now, her legacy takes center stage in this all-star gathering of soul and jazz artists reimagining songs from across her career, enhanced by immersive visuals from The Richard Rudolph Collection.
