It’s that extra special time of year again, where the diverse international community of hip hop, soul and jazz lovers unite to celebrate the worldwide phenomenon we now know as “Dilla Month”, taking over your frosty February to heat things up and remind you what’s really good again. And for fans of Toronto’s long-standing preeminent live beat-jazz collective known as re.verse, you already know what it is. Gathering for a 4th annual chapter of this epic tribute, we have all the OG band members in the mix – Chino De Villa smacking out the dirtiest drums and most percolating percussions; DIOMO aka Damian Matthew serenading the subwoofers on his 6-string bass with wild FX; Robb Cappelletto evoking soulful spirits on the guitar to make melodies soar sky high; and this year, perfectly complimenting the band will be our extra special first time guest who’s anything but a stranger to Dilla’s music – Cameron Tinklenberg, aka DJ Tink, transcending us with crystalline keys and celestial synths. AND, he’ll also be rocking an all Dilla-themed DJ set to end off the night! (maybe with the help of some good friends ;))
The re.verse crew is again coming together in honour and remembrance of the late great legend of Detroit: A giant of modern music production and rap that to this day makes Motor City proud, carrying and passing the torch of it’s distinct musical innovations and soulful traditions that have resonated around the globe for decades; a Soulquarian and a true trailblazer in hip hop culture that wasn’t afraid to be his authentic self through and through, swinging the doors wide open with his loose and eclectically soulful “unquantized” rhythms flawlessly executed on his iconic MPC 3000 LE (and later adding the legendary SP303 & 404 samplers); a fearlessly raw human that pull it all out there on the line for us to see and hear, both in his sounds and lyrics, paving the way for inspired future generations of musicians, producers, singers and emcees with open minds and deep souls to express themselves as purely as unfiltered as they please; the forever forward thinking, boundary breaking and endlessly inspiring “Champion Sound” of Detroit belovedly known as Jay Dee aka J Dilla.
re.verse is back with their highly renowned annual “re.verse plays Dilla” tribute event, returning to their intimate show roots for a special vibe, tight small room sound with a kinetic energy that simply can’t be replicated in a concert hall or warehouse. Once again, you won’t hear anything quite like this this anywhere else.
This event is coming to you live from Division 88 (225 Geary Ave.), a unique hybrid venue/studio hub for outstanding creative local music and media on the Toronto art community’s beloved Geary Ave strip, just East of the corner at Dufferin St. re.verse will be bringing you 2 full live sets of reimagined, twisted up and jazz’d out J Dilla instrumentals transversing all corners of his catalogue, from the SV anthems to the rare cuts and collabs to the Jay Dee bangers, with their signature re.verse “DJ” style performance – a non-stop flow of seamless transitions that wind their way through the idiosyncratic identity of the short (but bright) lived, atypical musical mastermind that quite literally changed music forever.
