An artist championed by Branford and Wynton Marsalis, virtuoso pianist and GRAMMY nominee Sean Mason celebrates Thelonious Monk’s 108th birthday with an inspired evening of solo piano devoted to his work.

Known to SFJAZZ audiences for musical direction of the sold-out 2023 Disney tribute When You Wish Upon a Star with Kim Nalley and Sasha Dobson, Mason is among the preeminent pianists of his generation.

The North Carolina native began his musical trajectory early, dabbling with the violin, drums, and trombone before picking up the piano at age 13. A meeting with Branford Marsalis while matriculating at UNC Greensboro led to tours with the saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master and performances on Marsalis’s score for the 2020 film version of August Wilson’s Oscar-winning Ma Rainey biopic Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Mason’s debut as a leader, the 2023 Blue Engine Records quintet release Southern Suite, is a wholehearted embrace of his Southern roots and his most recent projects include a pair of remarkable collaborations with poet Mahogany L. Browne and vocal great Catherine Russell

With this performance, Mason continues the distinguished tradition of solo recitals devoted to the music of Monk, a singular artist whose adventurous and idiosyncratic songbook continues to reveal new dimensions for exploration.
