If you’re anywhere near the Detroit music scene, chances are you’ve heard of the influential hip-hop trio Slum Village. The group was founded in the early 1990s by three childhood friends—Baatin, T3, and rapper-producer Jay Dee, also known as J Dilla—who all grew up together in the Conant Gardens neighborhood of Detroit, MI.
After graduating from Pershing High School, the trio began making waves in Detroit’s underground hip-hop scene. Originally going by the name Ssenepod (Dopeness spelled backwards), they quickly gained a following. In 1991, they changed their name to Slum Village and began recording demos that would eventually become their first album, Vol. 1, released in 1996 on cassette. The album, recorded in J Dilla’s basement and at RJ Rice Studios, helped them secure a record deal with Barak Records in 1998.
In 2000, J Dilla left the group to pursue a solo career but continued to support the group behind the scenes, mentoring Young RJ in production. Baatin and T3 pressed on, releasing their next album Trinity in 2002 through Barak/Capitol Records, which featured their first commercial single, “Tainted,” with a then-unknown Dwele.
In 2001, Dirty District, a compilation featuring Detroit rappers and largely produced by T3 and Young RJ, was released via Barak Records.
Their 2004 album, Detroit Deli (A Taste of Detroit), featured the hit single “Selfish,” produced by Kanye West and featuring John Legend.
In 2005, they dropped the mixtape Prequel to a Classic, with production from Young RJ and Black Milk, followed by their self-titled album Slum Village, both released under Barak Records.
Slum Village began working on their next project, Villa Manifesto, in 2009. It was released in 2010 under Ne’Astra Music/Koch Records.
In 2011 and 2012, they released the Dirty Slums Vol. 1 & 2 mixtapes, presented by DJ Mick Boogie and featuring artists like Rapper Big Pooh, De La Soul, Focus, Skyzoo, Phonte, and Phife. These tapes earned over 300,000 downloads.
In 2013 and 2014, they followed up with the B-Sides and Vintage albums under Ne’Astra Music.
The 2015/2016 project YES was produced by J Dilla and Young RJ and continued the group’s tradition of authentic Detroit hip-hop.
In 2018, they released Lost Scrolls Vol. 2—a collection of unreleased material and mixes from the original trio’s Fantastic Vol. 2 sessions—under Ne’Astra Music.
In 2023, they collaborated with Larry June and The Dramatics on the single “Just Like You,” followed by the 2024 single “Request.”
Slum Village continues to carry the torch with its longest-standing lineup—T3 and Grammy-nominated producer Young RJ—energized and committed to preserving and expanding the group’s legacy.
