Pianist Pedja Mužijević – acclaimed for his technical virtuosity – celebrates the joy and creativity of mixtapes in real time, in a spirited performance of music by composers from Haydn to Philip Glass. Mužijević writes, “In the 1970s, cassette players revolutionized how we experienced music at home. For the first time, we could record, curate, and create our own playlists. Maybe some Mozart, a Dolly Parton song and Steve Reich. No algorithms, no rational explanations, just our personal choices. We called them mixtapes. This is an homage to that time. The program is divided into three chapters that could fit on a 60-minute cassette. From the theatrical flair of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach and Joseph Haydn to the playful, tipsy waltz of György Ligeti and passionate romanticism of Amy Beach, each piece invites the audience into a new world. Homage to Mixtapes is a celebration of the art of listening, joy of discovery, and a nod to the creative freedom of mixtapes.”

Pianist and curator Pedja Mužijević’s career is defined by creative programming, unusual combinations of old and new music, and lasting collaborations with artists and ensembles. He has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orkest in The Hague, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Shinsei Nihon Orchestra in Tokyo. He has played solo recitals at Alice Tully Hall, 92NY and The Frick Collection in New York; the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center, Dumbarton Oaks, and The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse; Casals Hall and Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. His Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano was recorded live and released on the Oberlin Music label.

Mužijević’s interdisciplinary projects include touring with Mikhail Baryshnikov throughout the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia; and with Simon Keenlyside in Trisha Brown’s staged version of Schubert’s Winterreiseat Lincoln Center, London’s Barbican, La Monnaie in Brussels, and Opera National de Paris, as well as Holland, Lucerne and Melbourne festivals. In 2018 he conceived and premiered Framing Time, a theatrical staging of Morton Feldman’s Triadic Memories with lighting design by Burke Brown and choreography by Cesc Gelabert at Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, with subsequent performances in Germany and Spain.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include Homage to Mixtapes recital programs at UNLTD Powered by Verbier Festival, 92NY, and Southeastern Piano Festival in Columbia, South Carolina; Chopin and Beethoven piano concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra of the Rockies (Missoula, Montana), as well as leading Concert in 21st Century workshops at the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, and Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Pedja Mužijević is the artistic advisor for Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, and artistic administrator at Baryshnikov Arts in New York. He also leads workshops for young musicians around the world, from the Verbier Festival Academy to Banff Center, in which he looks at the concert experience, both in programming and presentation, to make it more relevant to today.
