Tomoko Omura celebrates her album “Run, Run, Run” (Outside in Music, 2025) — a multimedia work responding to the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, at TJG on Tues 8.18.

An original short story and musical score by Omura, “Run, Run, Run” follows Lila, an almost-13-year-old girl racing through the streets of a devastated New York after a nuclear attack, searching for her family — and the music traces her journey from shock and grief to a fragile, determined hope.

The project began after reading “Barefoot Gen” by Keiji Nakazawa, a manga closely based on his own experience surviving the Hiroshima bombing. Gen is roughly the same age as my son, and his story stayed with me. As a parent raising a child in New York City — the birthplace of the Manhattan Project — I found this history both fascinating and deeply personal, especially at a moment when the voices of those who lived through nuclear disaster are fading and the world feels increasingly volatile.
